The World of Wet Pets July 2008 Newsletter --Eric Rasmussen, Owner/Manager The Northwest Koi and Goldfish Show is fast approaching. It will be July 26th and 27th at the Forestry Center and admission is free. You will see some gorgeous fish on display so don’t miss it. Check out the web site at www.nwkg.org The new products we told you about last month are proving to be very popular. If you haven’t checked out the Glo Lighting System we think you should. And we are still bringing in those amazing livebearers out of Texas. For your freshwater community tanks we still have some Lime Green Rasboras (Rasbora kuboti) and just received some very nice Fire Rasbora (Rasbora vaterifloris). For the larger semi-aggressive tanks we have a mid-sized, active trout-like fish, Barilius sp. And for the African cichlid lovers we have Lethrinops sp. “Mbazi” in three sizes. It’s a beautiful peacock-like fish that is hard to find in the hobby. We have an Intern! Tereasa McKay has joined us for the summer from the Aquarium Science degree program at Oregon Coast Community College. We are putting her education to use and at the same time she’s experiencing a whole new side of Aquarium Science. Published periodically by Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan, Oregon Sea Grant's ornamental aquaculture specialist, the Ornamental Fish Health Newsletter highlights current research topics and events related to ornamental fish breeding and husbandry PREPARING FOR A CAREER IN ORNAMENTAL FISH Check out the Oregon Coast Community College's two-year Aquarium Science Program. The program is designed to provide instruction and student opportunities to learn aquatic animal husbandry skills. These skills can be marketed to a number of organizations and businesses such as public aquariums, research groups, fish hatcheries, aquaculture production facilities, aquarium service businesses, and the ornamental fish trade including retail, wholesale or fish farm production levels. Graduates could also transfer to a four-year institution. OTHER LINKS Greater Portland Aquarium Society. Since 1986, the Society has provided a forum, learning enviroment and scores of activities for its members. <>Pacific Northwest Marine Aquarium Society. PNWMAS services the state of Oregon as well as southern Washington. Most of our members hail from Portland, but our membership is growing by leaps and bounds in areas such as Salem and Eugene. If you desire to learn about the hobby and wish to find like-minded individuals, then PNWMAS is the place for you! We typically meet on the third Sunday of every month. Sometimes we meet at local fish stores, other times at a fellow hobbyists house and on occasion we hold meetings at one of our educator’s schools. More often than not, some form of coral trading ensues at each meeting. The Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) is an international, not-for-profit organization that brings marine aquarium animal collectors, exporters, importers and retailers together with aquarium keepers, public aquariums, conservation organizations and government agencies. MAC's mission is to conserve coral reefs and other marine ecosystems by creating standards and certification for those engaged in the collection and care of ornamental marine life from reef to aquarium. Sustainability in the marine aquarium trade also means safe, sustainable livelihoods and decent earnings for those collecting marine ornamentals in difficult and dangerous conditions. MAC is working to provide training in safe diving skills for collectors, as well as training in net collecting and best practices in post harvest handling and other skills for improving the quality and sustainability of the marine aquarium trade.
